That said, I dont have any problems on my computer vis-a-vis slowness due to the small amount of RAM I have. You can upgrade directly to Yosemite from 10.6.8 and it wont cost you anything if you want to upgrade to Lion, which is 10.7.x, that will cost you, though I dont know how much. I have a 13 MacBook (mid-2010) with 2 GB RAM (at the moment, Ill be upgrading that soon), and Yosemite runs fine for me, no slowness, so I would imagine on a machine that has twice the memory I do, it wont be an issue. Then, when you upgrade your current OS, youll know if you have a bunch of crapware that slowed it down.
I would install it without migrating any of your apps and data just to get a feel for what it should be like. Just get an external hard drive and install Yosemite onto that. GB really isnt enough, and more is better.
